Internet Fax is the use of the internet to send and receive a fax. Fax to Email, Email to Fax, PC to Fax, Web to Fax, Computer Fax, Online Fax, these and other terminologies are often used intending to mean the same thing. To send a fax via a modern day fax machine, you insert a document into a feeder tray and watch and wait as the document is scanned line by line. Once the document scanning is complete, the fax machine "picks up" the telephone line it is connected to, dials the destination fax number, screeches as it talks to the receiving fax machine, transmits the fax, and reports back to the sender OK if the fax was sent or NG if an error occurred. The person who receives the fax must print the fax to view it. The receiver must print a Transmission or TX report as it is often called. To send and receive a fax by fax machine in this way is location dependent, which means that both sender and receiver must fax at a pre-determined location.
Internet Fax services operate in a similar manner in that a document exists and needs to be transmitted. If you create a document outside of your computer, writing on paper with pen for example, then a scanner of some sort is required to digitize the document. Today, however, most documents are created by software on your PC or Laptop computer using software programs like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. Instead of clicking your Print icon, you can instead click a Fax icon, select a number from your fax contact list, and send the fax using an internet fax service. Today's digital signing and fax editing software make it possible to sign a fax without having to print and scan. If a signature is required, you use the computer equivalent of a signature stamp to sign your documents prior to faxing.
